The Magic Light of Palatki
Palatki is located in the Red Rock Country. That country between the Verde Valley, north of Oak Creek, and Flagstaff, Arizona. the mountain country of Northern Arizona. Palatki is a Heritage Site that is protected and administered by the Coconino National Forest, Red Rock Ranger District.
The area was first recorded by Dr. Jesse Walter Fewkes of the Smithsonian Institution in 1895 and in 1911 when he conducted test excavations at the site. Fewkes was investigating Hopi migration traditions that related the Verde Valley ruins to Hopi Clans. It was Fewkes who named this site "Palatki", Hopi word meaning "Red House".
This canyon site contains a recording of human history that spans thousands of years. The records left are an amazing array of rock art that is chiseled, scratched, and painted on the canyon walls and alcoves. Found here also are the beautiful Sinagua cliff dwellings.
Palatki is located in Red Canyon . It is a canyon of immense beauty. Soaring red cliffs and above the canyon and it's red cliffs the high country of Northern Arizona.
