From the end of Rock Creek road at Mosquito Flats trailhead you have sort of a "head start". The trailhead is at an elevation of 10200 feet so a 3.5 mile walk takes you up into the high country pretty quickly. Mono Pass has some extraordinary views of the High Sierra.
