Just about 45 minutes south of Bakersfield Wind Wolves Preserve is worth a visit. It has an impressive array of landforms. The Preserve is huge. 95,000 acres. It's also the west coast's largest non-profit preserve. It's owned by The Wildlands Conservancy and a good portion of the Preserve is open to the public. Check them out at their website.
